17 Mind-Blowing Pancakes in Los Angeles, 2019 Edition Eater LA

Light, flakey, and topped with fresh berries, the butter won’t be missed. This down and dirty family-run restaurant has been serving West LA since 1982. That homey feel comes across in the pancakes, the no-nonsense buttermilk flapjacks that come golden and relatively thick. First time I ate here was back in 2017 in the Downtown San Diego location. We got the Dutch baby pancakes and this takes about 20+ mins.

Since 1948, the Walker family name has become synonymous with quality family dining. The family has since perfected its reputation for outstanding gourmet pancakes and breakfasts. Our story begins when Victor and Everett Walker began opening snack shops in Evanston, IL.

Waffles

Rancho Park’s longstanding daytime spot John O’ Groats feels a bit like a country cottage transported to Los Angeles. The biscuits are a major draw, served in various forms ranging from bacon cheddar to chocolate chip, while pancakes and eggs dominate the rest of the morning fare. Sidle up to the counter, order some coffee, and pull out a book for a wonderfully relaxed breakfast. From its dependably good cooking to its retro style, Lisa’s Coffee Shop is adored among those who reside in Covina and beyond. Andy’s Coffee Shop isn’t exactly a hidden gem given its location on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, but it’s still off the usual diner maps thanks to its tiny, mid-block storefront.

Fried Egg Sandwich

The restaurant might always be busy, but it’s worth enduring crowds for reasonably priced breakfast favorites and appealingly spongey muffins. The once-beloved breakfast spot moved to a more expansive location in Hollywood, but later reopened a breakfast spot right back in its original Santa Monica Boulevard address. But the cult favorite oatmeal griddle cakes remain, still slathered in maple cinnamon butter, and as delicious as ever. If it’s classic buttermilk stacks on the radar, old school diners like The Original Pantry fit the bill, and with 24-hour service at that. The City of Angels is also home to some outrageously decadent versions, most notably from West Hollywood’s iconic The Griddle.

Olympic Cafe

Nicely crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with conspicuous buttermilk flavor, these are pancakes prepared just right. It doesn’t hurt that they are served with a side of salted clarified butter that facilitates a solid drenching. The Griddle is the king of outrageous, Frisbee-sized pancakes. The menu has nearly twenty varieties of cardiac arrest-inducing options, from the Black Magic filled with crushed Oreos to the Saturday Morning Fever with Bailey’s and Kahlua batter. The Saturday and Sunday morning lines are no joke, but is worth the wait after one bite of these cakey monstrosities. Came here during a weekend trip to San Diego with my wife, and decided to try the baked pecan Dutch pancake.

The breakfast basics are best here, so opt for the omelets, crispy bacon and hash browns, and pancakes — which can be ordered individually, so there’s no need to share with the table. Best of all, Andy’s Coffee Shop is free from those pesky lines found at hip brunch places in town. Whether seated at a table outside covered by a tent or perched on a stool at the counter inside, there’s no such thing as a bad table at Nick’s Cafe.

Watts Coffee House

In 2006, Richard Sr. relocated to San Diego and opened the third location in downtown San Diego, CA. In 2014, Richard Walker Jr. joined the family business and opened the fourth Richard Walker’s Pancake House in La Jolla, CA. In 2019 and 2020, Richard Jr. opened the fifth and sixth Richard Walker’s Pancake House in Carlsbad and Del Mar, CA, respectively. Richard Walker’s Pancake House has been, and always will be, a 100% family owned, family funded, and family operated business. It’s impossible to miss the electric green exterior of Fred 62.

There’s nothing quite like the quaint beach bungalow-turned pancake house Uncle Bill’s. The Manhattan Beach mainstay is quite the local hangout, with serious weekend lines. But when pancakes come with ocean views, who can really complain. Partake in an omelette which is the standard by which all other omelettes are measured! Made with 4 Grade AA eggs and whipped to order, our baked omelettes are filled with the freshest local ingredients and stuffed with the finest available cheeses. Atrium’s creative duo chef Hunter Pritchett and pastry chef Gregory Baumgartner experimented and developed a platter of buckwheat banana pancakes with french butter and maple syrup.

You can’t miss the sweet appley aroma when you walk by the restaurant… That’s from our famous baked pancakes that have made Richard Walker’s unlike any other. These fluffy masterpieces are baked to order (10-20 minutes), but your patience will be rewarded! Please join us in celebrating our Bavarian roots and don’t leave Richard Walker’s without trying a baked pancake. Long considered one of the best pancakes in town, the incredible griddle produces some of the crispiest, fluffiest pancakes you’ve ever tried. In cultures throughout the world, the rabbit symbolically indicates comfort, abundance and family. Richard Walker’s Pancake House has chosen the symbol of the rabbit to say “Welcome Home.” We hope any time you see the Richard Walker’s rabbit, you find comfort and feel right at home.

It’s a solid addition for everyone, even those adhering to a gluten-free diet. For over 20 years, CJ’s Cafe does a daily and hearty breakfast and lunch. With two locations in Baldwin Hills and on the south end of Mid-Wilshire, CJ’s has the most reasonably-priced breakfast on this list, with three well-sized pancakes for $5.51. The family-owned S&W Country Diner operates in Downtown Culver City, and is completely retro with the 1950s-esque counters, decor, and longtime cash-only policy. Its old-school feel even filters through the menu with the pancakes. Four fluffy platter-sized cakes come in one stack, and it might be best to share unless truly hungry.

Regulars know to order the griddled ham that’s glazed in brown sugar with a side of eggs and hash browns. This 75-year-old Los Angeles institution on the outskirts of Chinatown is open daily from 6 a.m. Eat’n Park is a Burbank mainstay that has endured since 1982.

Those who like their pancakes served with a side of nostalgia will find a happy home at The Original Pantry CafĂ©. This no-fuss 24/7 diner opened back in 1924, and has probably been serving these straightforward buttermilk pancakes since its opening day. There’s not much that needs to be said about these flapjacks – eating them at the restaurant’s worn counter just feels right. While all the pancakes at the Original Pancake House are excellent (shout out to the extremely popular chocolate chip), the real specialty here is the oven-baked Dutch Baby.

It’s a familiar Los Feliz sight on Vermont Avenue for 25 years and counting, with an incredibly relaxed and easy breakfast menu of Denver omelets, steak and eggs, and breakfast enchiladas. Fred 62 works for late-night revelers and early morning breakfast seekers alike. Loaded with more butter than one really wants to think about, Jon & Vinny’s has made itself a serious contender for best pancakes in LA. They’re as straightforward as they get with light, fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with the usual accoutrements of maple syrup, a generous helping of salted butter and berries.

In 1981, Ray Walker and Richard Walker Sr., sons of Victor, opened Walker Bros. In 1989, Richard Walker Sr. ventured out on his own and opened Richard Walker’s Pancake House in Schaumburg, IL. In 1996, Richard Sr. opened a second location in Crystal Lake, IL.

Drive past this Inglewood institution, and find hoards of locals trying to get a fix of South LA food staples. It’s best to avoid the place on Sundays after church, when the 1982-born restaurant is especially swarmed with hungry diners looking to get their hands on the butter-laden flapjacks. During weekend brunch at West Hollywood’s hit charmer, Tesse, order chef Raphael Francois and pastry chef Sally Camacho Mueller’s Limoncello pancakes. The pair combined the Italian lemon liqueur with marscapone, maple syrup, and chantilly cream.
